Abstract

The authors evaluated the safety of vaginal povidone-iodine treatment (Betadine; EGIS) in the population-based Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities, 1980-1996. The findings of the first controlled epidemiological study suggest that vaginal treatment of pregnant women with povidone-iodine in the usual therapeutic doses does not increase the risk of CAs in newborns.
