Transient laser cooling of two-level quantum systems with narrow natural line widths

Abstract

We investigated laser cooling of two-level quantum systems (QS) with long lifetime of the transition. The QS have been illuminated by two identical and simultaneously switched-on counter propagating trains of π pulses. The duration of the pulses is assumed to be shorter than the lifetime of the excited state of the QS. The carrier frequency of the pulses is swept during the train in both trains identically to be put in resonance with the various velocity (v) groups of QS.
