Thermodiffusional instability and potential distribution in laser-heated absorbing electrolytes

Abstract

Continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser heating of CuSO4 electrolytic solution leads to the formation of thermodiffusional instabilities, i.e. avalanche-like changes in the local metal ion concentration. Three quasistationary regions of different Cu2+ concentration are formed around the beam path; the dimensions of the enriched and the depleted regions depend on the concentration of the solution and the beam parameters.
