Theory and experiment with chirped mirrors for dispersion compensation

Abstract

Chirped dielectric mirrors offer a viable solution for broadband dispersion control and feedback in femtosecond laser systems. An approximate Fourier transform relationship between the refractive index profile and the complex amplitude reflectance of dielectric mirrors has been observed. This relationship can be used to synthesize graded index dielectric mirrors with the prescribed dispersion properties. Some of the dispersive properties of chirped mirrors and solutions to several technical problems are discussed.
