This paper addresses the question of the developmental origins of theory of mind in infancy. The results of five experiments (four carried out with 6 to 12 month-olds using the habituation technique; the fifth carried out with 3 year-olds) are discussed supporting the notion that theory of mind develops from an earlier interpretational system that is used to represent and reason about goal-directed behaviour from 9 months of age following the principle of “rational action” or the “teleological stance”. The features of this system are discussed in detail, emphasizing that it does not require the representation of mental states nor is it restricted to the domain of objects with animacy cues.
