Data for serum gonadotropin levels obtained by this experiment as well as values of 17-β-oestradiol and progesterone are summarized in the table. In every female, a progesterone value more than 10 ng/ml was found for the 21st day of the control cycle (mean value: 16.2 ± 2.2 ng/ml (table) so normality of their cycles was considered to be proven. A considerable increase of serum LH level could be observed in two patients during the treated cycle on the 16th day, whereas this level was moderately increased in three of the women. In all but one case, serum progesterone levels significantly exceeded the limit of 5 ng/ml, for progesterone considered as the criterion for functioning corpus luteum on the 21st day. Analysis of this patient's hormone values showed that the mid-cycle LH peak (64 mIU/ml) was not followed by an increase in serum progesterone level, and both values measured on the 16th and 21st days of the cycle refer to failure of ovulation and lack of corpus luteum. In this case, an ovarian cause may be assumed to result in failure of ovulation. Suppression of ovulation occurred in none of the authors' patients, except one. This may be the result of administering IDM for a relatively shorter time and in smaller dosage than in the tests made on animals.
