Surface composition of the ordered FeCo alloys

Abstract

The procedure of quantitative AES analysis proposed for ordered alloys is applied to surface studies of the FeCo alloys. Surface composition of alloys after extensive sputtering is practically the same as bulk composition with the exception of Fe50Co50 alloy for which slight Co enrichment is found. The results agree quantitatively with the simple theoretical model of preferential sputtering. High temperature annealing at temperatures exceeding 973 K causes moderate Fe surface enrichment in agreement with the theory of Moran‐Lopez and Falicov. Quantitative analysis by XPS provided results consistent with AES.
