Surface composition of the ordered A150C050 alloy

Abstract

A procedure of quantitative AES analysis applicable to intermetallic compounds and ordered alloys is proposed. The ordered AL50CO50 alloy is found to be enriched with cobalt after extensive sputtering. This result agrees qualitatively with theoretical predictions of Ho et al. According to the theory of Moran‐Lopez and Falicov, the surface of the A150C050 alloy in thermodynamical equilibrium with the bulk should be considerably enriched with aluminum. However, the surface composition of the investigated alloy after sputtering did not change during equilibration at temperatures ranging from 683 to 913 K. Thus, the alloys with large enthalpy of formation seem to have stable surface compositions in a wide range of temperatures.
