Abstract

The structure of the sample has an influence on the results of spectral analysis of solids and can be explained in terms of the parameters characterizing the evaporation processes. After a discussion of the theoretical relationships an experimental approach involving a model study is discussed. A formula is proposed to compare quantitatively the evaporation patterns. The magnitude of the structure effect is derived by comparison of evaporation curves obtained by d.c. arc excitation of samples with the same chemical but different crystallographic composition. In the present paper the role of additives on the structure effect is shown for 12 elements in a silicate matrix. LiF followed by Li2B4O7 and Li2B2O4 proved the most suitable additive to minimize the effect of structure while the addition of Li2CO3 enlarged the structure effect considering the situation.
