Abstract

The author reacted epsilon-aminocaproic acid and epsilon- caprolactam in equivalent mole ratios below 200 C or in the neighborhood of the industrially used temperature (230 to 240 C) to form cyclic oligomers, semicyclic compounds, and linear oligomers of epsilon amino caproic acid. Evidence was obtained that the terminal amidine group does not act toward chain-termination, but plays an important role directly in chain growth.
