Upon the effects of ionizing radiations the structure and consequently the function of plasma membranes are perturbed. One of their features, the surface charges of cells are altered, accordingly. More and more techniques are becoming available to study these phenomena, in various regions of a cell. Data on radiation-induced changes in electrophoretic mobility, two-phase partition and in bindings of various ligands are presented. The state-of-art on structural changes behind surface charge alterations is reviewed, as well as the most recent data on indications of the possible biological consequences.
