Pyrolysis—gas chromatography of styrene—acrylonitrile copolymers: Calculation of kinetic parameters and sequence distribution

Abstract

A series of styrene—acrylonitrile copolymers of different composition was investigated by pyrolysis—gas chromatography. The main volatile produces of the thermal decomposition are monomers, dimers and trimers, and the latter two may also be composed of different monomers. The variation of monomer, dimer and trimer production with copolymer composition was measured. The pyrolysis produce yields were introduced into mathematical model distribution of the copolymers and the rate constants of the thermal decomposition reactions were obtained. The results show that the styrene—acrylonitrile copolymers have highly alternating structure, and the thermal decomposition is largely affected by the sequence of the monomer units on the macroradical and under decomposition.
