Problem of biological dose determination in brachytherapeutic systems

Research output: Article

Abstract

The importance of biological dosage in the available brachytherapeutic systems is described. Variable arrangements can be applied with Ra-226 and Co-60 radiation sources having significantly different dose rates. The dose rates in standard arrangements vary between 50 rad/hour-500 rad/hour. The dose values of the various brachytherapeutic or combined brachy- and teletherapeutic systems given in rad cannot be added, and their biological effectivity is not characterized by them. Treatment time, dose, number of fractions and dose rates characterise together the effectivity of a radiotherapeutic regime. The above mentioned factors are contained by the partial tolerance values given in ret and TDF; their values can be linearly added, and thus they are suitable for the description and biologic comparison of various radiotherapeutic systems.
