The paper presents a new approach to the direct design of axisymmetric slabs. In addition to the usual ultimate load criterion, other design criteria are introduced to control cracking at service loads. A set of general rules for the form of optimal solutions is derived, and a comprehensive set of least- reinforcement solutions is given. Illustrations of the method are given.
