The high bluff along the River Danube, south of Budapest, is of prime importance among landslide sensitive areas of Hungary. This is because villages, located on the high bluff close to the Danube, are affected by active movement hazard. Therefore, experts have been dealing with the causes of landslides and the stabilizing attempts of the riverbank for decades. In the present campaign undertaken by the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary, field survey, in situ tests and laboratory measurements were made on an area in village Kulcs affected by active movements. This paper summarizes the results of material investigations. Boreholes were drilled parallel and perpendicular to the river bank, where the landslide affected area is bordered by springs. This site was partially stabilized after the latest sliding event, however, indications of ongoing movements have been identified during field observations. Texture, grain size distribution and mineral composition of sediment samples from drilling and surface samples were measured. These samples show that paleosoils in loess and underlying red clay may have important role in the initiation of slidings.
