Phase formation study of la-modified lead magnesium niobate

Among the lead-based relaxor ferroelectric materials of general formula Pb(B′B″)O3, lead magnesium niobate Pb(Mg 1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is probably the most widely studied one because of its excellent dielectric and electrostrictive properties. However, a significant problem concerning PMN ceramics is the difficulty in preparing a single-phase material of only the perovskite structure without the appearance of a pyrochlore phase that can be detrimental to the dielectric properties. Various synthetic techniques for suppressing the formation of pyrochlore-type compound (i.e. columbite method) have been reported in the literature. Former studies showed that the degree of ordering and the size of ordered domains can be enhanced by incorporating lanthanum into lead magnesium niobate lattice. The present work is dedicated to the study of phase formation in La-modified PMN. Pure PMN and lanthanum-modified PMN ceramics were synthesized from high purity raw materials via a columbite-type route. The study was performed using thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM.
