Origin of groundwater and dissolved ammonium in SE Hungary: evaluation by environmental isotopes

Abstract

The environmental isotope study of the groundwater with high NH4 content (2-3 mg l-1) provided by the Regional Water Supply of Ujkigyos revealed that the groundwater in the main aquifer is a mixture of Pleistocene water (uncorrected 14C age is >10 000 years, δ18O is -12.5‰) and Holocene water (older than 40 years, δ18O is -9.3‰). The stable nitrogen isotope data demonstrate the natural origin of the dissolved ammonium in the supplied water. -Authors
