The aim of this talk is to share the authors' point of view on the role and importance of geomathematics in solving applied geosciences problems. The reasons for the growing importance of mathematics in the geosciences are discussed first. Then a comparative and critical summary of several appropriate mathematical methods are presented briefly, together with their advantages, disadvantages and shortcomings. Such tools must be able to represent and handle different kinds of uncertainty arising in practical problems. The main fields of applications of these methods are reviewed next. This includes resource and reserve estimation, natural hazards, geo-environmental studies, and waste disposal safety assessment. Based on their personal experience, the authors discuss the main steps of the application of mathematical methods in applied geosciences. The fundamental role and importance of geological and geomathematical modeling is stressed. Finally three main conclusions are drawn.
