Abstract

The aim of the study was the evaluation of self-assembled layers in respect of corrosion protection. Chemisorption of 1,5-diphosphono-pentane on Au surface modified by 3-mercapto-propyl-sodium-sulphonate and the protective effect on Armco iron were studied with use of sodium-perchlorate solution. Chemisorption was checked by quartz-crystal microbalance and cyclic voltammetry. Corrosion protection of Armco iron was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The 1,5-diphosphono-pentane reveals no inclination to form self-assembled layer on the surface of Au but the protective effect on Armco iron is significant. Its degree of protection on clean surface is 76,2% and in the presence of zinc ions 98,6%. The degree of protection is much lower in the case of oxidized surface. Formation of protective layer lasted 24 hours. After 24 hours the layer was progressively destroyed by the products of oxidation and protection ceased after some days.
