Neutral carrier potassium-selective electrodes with low resistances

Abstract

Valinomycin-based electrodes for potassium are described which have resistances as low as 5 kΩ. Addition of a mixture of tetraphenylborate and a quaternary ammonium salt lowers the resistance to 1-3% of that without the additive. The electrode retains high selectivity for K+ over Na+ even in the presence of a large excess of the tetraphenylborate additive over the carrier.
