Abstract

The lymphocyte and serum activities of patients with carcinoma of the colon, chronic ulcerative colitis, and that of healthy individuals were studied on Cr51 labeled human embryonic colon cells with the half micro lymphocyte cytotoxicity method. The lymphocytes of patients with carcinoma of the colon showed no higher activities than that of normal individuals, or patients with chronic ulcerative colitis. No cytotoxic or blocking antibodies against embryonal colonic cells could be detected in the sera of the patients. Since the carcinoembryonic antigen, according to references, is an autoantigen, no significantly different lymphocyte cytotoxicity values can be expected in patients with carcinoma of the colon than in normal individuals or chronic ulcerative colitis patients, because of the developing immunotolerance. This was confirmed by the authors' investigations.
