Joint phase space distributions for atom-field interactions

Abstract

The equation of motion for the case of one two-level atom interacting with a single, nearly resonant field mode (Jaynes-Cummings model) is derived for the atomic and field Wigner function. In the case of interaction, the joint Wigner's function behavior directly shows Rabi oscillations or collapse and revival, depending on the appropriate initial condition. The joint Wigner function can be used to treat problems wherein the single field-mode interacts with a collection of two-level atoms.
