Abstract

Interface modification is a way to influence not only the mechanical properties but also the fire retardancy. This possibility is not yet entirely utilized because of the complex influence of the interfacial/surface layers on the degradation process. This paper tries to contribute to the understanding of the interfacial effects and interactions in the melt, solid and char phases in order to contribute to more conscious design of interfacial layers. The use of a thick phosporylated epoxy interlayer instead of the conventional cationic surfactants around clay nanoparticles lead us to considerable improvement in the fire retardancy of PP systems.
