The interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with a resonant three level system (fine structure levels of rubidium) was studied. It was found that for low intensities a linear model and for higher intensities a semiclassical model was sufficient to describe the results. In order to simulate the interaction process, it was essential to have an accurate knowledge of the incident electric field, i.e., the amplitude and the phase. Results showed that on longer time scales the reshaping was solely governed by the dynamics of atomic system whereas on small time scales the phase modulation of incident pulse influenced the reshaping process during pulse propagation.
