Abstract

Applying the sol-gel technique the authors developed synthesis methods to prepare iron containing (even partly isomorphously substituted) sodalites and NaA (LTA) zeolites. The sodalites (with iron contents in the range 0-3 wt. %) served as model raw materials instead of crystalline alkali aluminium hydrosilicates from the alumina manufacturing industry (like the by-product DSP) to produce various commercially interesting zeolite species (e.g. NaA (LTA)) by making them amorphous using diluted acids followed by recrystallisation. The iron containing NaA (LTA) is a new material. Instrumental investigations (Mössbauer, XPS and UV-VIS spectroscopies) revealed that at least 60-62 % of the total iron content is situated in framework positions, in Th coordination, but, non-framework iron in Oh coordination is also significant. The incom-plete incorporation is mainly due to the "chemistry" of the sol-gel technique.
