Abstract

Conventional risk factors play a very important role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. Possible inheritance of the disease is, however well known. Recent genotype-phenotype linkage analysis studies are showing increasing body of evidence for significant correlations with known or unknown genomic sequences. In this report recent results are presented, with practical advice for medical doctors which patients to refer for genetic investigation to estimate cardiovascular risk and to start adequate and appropriate medical therapy. Genetics does not only represent a diagnostic tool, but also a therapeutic approach in cardiovascular medicine. In contrast to medicine-based therapy, gene-based methods have prolonged and localized biological effects. Safety of gene therapy has been demonstarted in several pre-clinical and clinical studies of myocardial ischaemia and infarction.
