Abstract

Draft-tube fluidized-bed bioreactors for oxygen consuming immobilized cell bioprocesses have been developed. The gas-liquid oxygen transfer characteristics of the reactors was investigated and it was established that they are in strong correlation with the dissipated power in the reactor. The effect of low density particles modelling cell support material on the oxygen transfer was much smaller than that is general in the traditional three-phase reactors. It was concluded that the special structural and hydrodynamical properties of the new reactor types can counterbalance the bubble coalescing effect of the bioparticles.
