Effects of frost-induced biennial bearing on nutrient availability and fruit disorders in an integrated apple orchard

Abstract

Frost is an environmental factor that may afflict many horticultural regions in Hungary and elsewhere in the world. As a result of climate change the incidence of spring frost is likely to increase. Thus it is important to understand the influence of fruit loss and manage this to maintain a profitable orchard. The year of 2007 was a particularly difficult time for Hungarian fruit growers, especially in Alföld region. Serious, and repeated frosts occurred at blooming time (22 April, 2 May (T=-6=9°C)) in this region, which caused 100% of fruit loss. Frost caused an "off-year" in the orchards in 2007. The vegetative and reproductive balance in trees was significantly shifted and fruit loss resulted higher vigour and increased incidence of nutrient disorders of trees. The purpose of our research was to study the effects of frost of 2007 on nutrient uptake in several apple cultivars in an integrated apple orchard in North-West Hungary. Besides plant observations, macronutrient status of five apple cultivars was studied for three years (2006-2008) to study the effects of frost on fruit load of trees and to study the degree and long-term impact cause by frost stress. Leaf N content decreased while leaf P and K was increased at all cultivars in the year of frost. In the next year leaf P and K dramatically decreased while leaf N increased and reached level attained the previous cropping year. The phenomenon of biennal bearing occurred. The crop loss puts at risk the current season's fruit, and also because of the perennial nature of fruits, it influences the productivity of fruits for several seasons in the future.
