Abstract
In this brief literature review of dysphoric mania, the authors point out the features, which make it different from pure mania. In spite of the voluminous publications in the international literature, there is no study in Hungarian language on this topic. Dysphoric mania is clinically important, because it needs special treatment strategy. Dysphoric mania appears in 20-57 percent of all manic cases. Mania does not have a universal psychopathology, because it has at least two different subtypes. This review gives a summary of familial, clinical, biological and pharmacological characteristics of dysphoric mania, which distinguishes it from the pure ('euphoric') mania. At the end of the review, the authors describe typical case histories of two female patients suffering from dysphoric mania, including the pharmacotherapeutic consequences.
