Dependence of the light output of liquid scintillation systems on spectral properties of components

Abstract

On the basis of literary data it is concluded that the spectral characteristics (absorption and emission bands) of the components of liquid scintillation systems (solvents, scintillators, shifters, diluters, quenchers, additive materials etc.) definitely influence the light output of the systems. In the case of good scintillator + solvent pairs, the absorption bands of the solvent and scintillator overlap or are near to each other. The absorption bands of shifters are in the emission bands of the scintillators. The absorption bands of diluters are usually in a range of wave-length shorter than that of the absorption bands of the solvents. The absorption bands of additive materials increasing the light output overlap those of diluters, solvents and scintillators. The absorption bands of quenchers are usually in the absorption bands of solvents or scintillators. Therefore, a greater importance must be attached to radiation energy transfer.
