High pressure, high temperature corrosion of 1.4550 stainless steel alloy was studied under hydrodesulfurization conditions of gas oil and modeling the co-processing of waste fatty acid containing gas oil. Considerable amount of preliminary experiments were conducted to determine the optimal experimental setup. After a 1000-h exposure time (time on stream) and a standardized cleaning procedure, weight loss measurements, microscopic and surface analytical tests (SEM/EDX/XRD) were carried out. The average corrosion rate of the investigated alloy remained well below 0.1 mm/year, however, some protective film breakdown and localized corrosion phenomena were observed on the test specimens. The surface analytical results indicated the presence of a multilayer structure with a looser iron sulfide outer layer and a more compact chromium sulfide inner layer, both of them being susceptible for film breakdown.
