To reduce the side effects of treatments used in tumour therapy or rather to enhance the efficiency of the therapy, it is suggested to use complementary treatments, dietary supplements based on biologically active molecules to assist chemotherapy. Only a few details are available on therapeutic adjuvant molecules in small animal oncology, and the results of studies with rodents are not adaptable without doubt, due to interspecies differences. Biocompatible polymers, which can assist photodynamic therapy, and anti-oestrogen compounds having complementary effect in the therapy of certain oestrogen-sensitive tumours are also representatives of therapeutic adjuvant molecules. Active substances of herbs used in the traditional Chinese and Indian medicine for thousand-years, such as polyphenols, organic sulphur compounds or certain phyto-carbohydrates have good potential in accessory therapy. Orthomolecular therapy means supplementation of vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids or some minerals in "mega" dose. Ascorbic acid was the first one used in anti-tumour therapy, and several contradictory results have been published about its effects and mode of action. In veterinary oncology some of the dietary supplements, like n-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, E, D and B12 are commonly used. Among the minerals, selenium is known to have anti carcinogen activity, but sensitivity of different types of cancer to selenium might vary largely.
