The authors demonstrated equine arteritisvirus strains by PCR or virus isolation in 20 cases from different examination material (semen or aborted foetus). The relatively large number of samples originating from persistently virus spreading stallions kept in different Hungarian stocks and in two cases from organs of aborted foetus, gave opportunity to compare the virus strains originating from the stocks by molecular methods after the determination of nucleotide sequence of genom sections amplified by polymerase chain reaction following transcription of RNA. It was stated by examination of a section of 556 nukleotids of the GL glycoprotein coding region that more, genetically easily distinguishable viruses cause infection in the Hungarian horse stocks. On the basis of the similarity of two virus strains the epidemiological connection is probable between two stocks, in consequence, following horizontal infection abortion in large number was observed. Comparing the sequences originating from the four virus strains to sequences placed into gene bank it can be stated that the Hungarian strains show familiarity with viruses of European origin, specially with II.A (European 1) group.
