Cloning of the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) gene has made it possible to produce large amounts of purified human IGF-I, and to investigate if this peptide can stimulate growth and exert insulin-like actions, such as protein synthesis and glucose transport in patients with growth retardation, catabolic conditions, or diabetes mellitus. The authors give a review of data from studies of IGF-I in humans.
