The morphologic characteristics of chronic liver diseases with autoimmune pathogenesis (chronic active hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and cryptogenic cirrhosis) as well as the histologic differential diagnosis are reviewed by the author. The importance of the examination of liver biopsy material in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis is emphasized. The performance of serial biopsies is recommended by the author, in order to assess the degree of progression and to evaluate the effect of the immunosuppressive treatment.
