Chlorination of a slag produced from red mud

Abstract

The chlorination of a titaniferrous slag produced from red mud was investigated. Chlorine and phosgene were used as the reaction gases. The experiments were carried out in a thermobalance and in a tube reactor. Changes in the bulk and surface compositions were measured by applying atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The mechanism of the chlorination processes is described.
