Bridging the gap between weather and climate forecasting: Research priorities for intraseasonal prediction

Abstract

Workshop discussions is presented regarding the gap between numerical weather prediction (NWP) and numerical climate prediction (NCP) which is an important factor in the connection between the weather and climate itself. The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX) was developed to accelerate the expansion from the current 7- to 10-day limit to 14 days with its new forecast paradigm. NWP has the most accurate initial conditions for the atmosphere while NCP focuses on capturing the initial conditions of the varying components of the coupled systems which are the ocean and land surface and their atmospheric response.
