Biodetection and determination of biological activity of natural compounds

Abstract

There are three main mechanisms by which one microorganism may limit the growth of another microorganism: antibiosis, micro-parasitism, and competition for resources [1]. Viullemin in l899 applied the word antibiosis to situations in which one organism destroyed another to sustain its own life [2]. Among the cell proliferation promoting and retarding factors, antibiotics are the most important molecules originating from the antibiosis processes. The word antibiotic is very broad and includes widely disparate mechanisms. Microbial toxins have recently been discussed in detail [3]; they are usually considered to be poisonous to higher animals and humans. The antibiotic penicillin can be a toxin to a person sensitive to it.
