A one-step construction method for synthesizing heat exchanger networks is developed based on the recognition of additional (hidden and pseudo) pinch phenomena. Maximum energy recovery is ensured by the repeated calculation of the heat cascade and repeated application of the pinch design rules. A significant decrease in the number of units is indicated by applying an arbitrary minimum heat load parameter and direct relaxation of the pinch principle. The capability of the method is demonstrated on illustrative examples and on a large-scale industrial problem.
