A study of the adsorption of chloride ions at ruthenium electrodes

Abstract

Adsorption of labelled Cl- ions was studied at a ruthenium electrode in 1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 supporting electrolyte. Electrodes were obtained by electrodeposition of Ru3+ ions on a thin gold layer. Potential dependence of the adsoprtion was studied over a wide potential range (-200-+1400 mV on the RHE scale). It has been shown that features observed on the Γ vs. E curves (maximum at E = 200 mV, no potential depedence of the adsorption above E = 800 mV, hysteresis phenomena) can be explained by the formaton of Hads and Oads species described in the literature. The effect of H3PO4 and HClO4 on the adsorption was stude by the case of HClO4 new evidence was furnished that this species suffers a slow reductive transformation at Ru electrodes.
