A direct and indirect radiotracer study of the adsorption of serine at a platinized platinum electrode

Abstract

The adsorption behaviour of serine was studied in acid medium (1 mol dm-3) by a direct radiotracer method using 14 C labelled serine and by means of an indirect method studying the competitive adsorption between non-labelled serine and 36Cl-labelled Cl- ions. A strong irreversible chemisorption was found in a wide potential range (200-500 mV on the RHE scale). It follows from a comparison of the adsorption behaviour of alanine and serine that the strong chemisorption observed for the latter species should be ascribed to the presence of the -CH2-OH entity in the molecule. Study of the behaviour of the chemisorbed molecules confirms this assumption.
