1/f noise and extreme value statistics

The finite size scaling of the roughness of signals was studied in systems displaying Gaussian 1/f power spectra. The Fisher-Tippett-Gumbel (FTG) distribution emerged as the scaling function when boundary conditions were periodic. The experiments on voltage fluctuations in GaAs films were analyzed. The results suggested that extreme events and their statistics may underlie the physical and mathematical description of Gaussian 1/f fluctuations.
