Xylene isomerization on H-mordenites and H-clinoptilolites

Abstract

The title reaction has been studied on H-forms of natural mordenite and clinoptilolite, prepared by one of the following procedures: (i) acid treatment, (ii) NH4 + exchange followed by deammoniation and (iii) Ag+ exchange followed by reduction with hydrogen. The active sites are acidic OH groups. The method of preparation affects the character of Brönsted sites and, consequently, the catalytic properties. On H(Ag)-mordenite isomerization proceeds selectively without deactivation. Consecutive monomolecular transformation of o-⇌m-⇌p-xylene occurs with rate determining surface reactions. Rate constants and adsorption equilibrium constants have been determined from kinetic data.
