Wire tension measurement using voltage switching

Abstract

We describe a method for measuring wire tensions in drift cells in which mechanical wire oscillations are generated by switching one of the cell voltages and the mechanical resonance frequency of the wire is determined from the current oscillations induced on the wire. This method is demonstrated for a single-wire drift tube, and its main features are explored and discussed.
