Wigner crystallization as a possibility for the metal-nonmetal transition in magnetite

Abstract

A one-dimensional, single-band model for the metal-nonmetal transition in Fe3O4 is investigated, applying a modification of Gutzwiller's variational wave function method. The transition is assumed to take place under pressure at T = 0°K. It is found that if the strength of the interatomic Coulomb interaction exceeds a certain value, a Wigner-crystallised ground state is energetically favorable.
