Forty five patients with white sponge nevus of the oral mucosa were examined. Thirty four were between 9 and 30 yr old. A family occurrence was observed in 12 cases. The extension and the severity of the lesion varied between the individuals and from time to time in the same patient. The gingiva and the hard palate were not involved. Routine laboratory examinations as well as cytologic procedures were performed. Histopathologic examination showed characteristic features under the light and electron microscope. No malignant or premalignant changes were found during the period of observation. The pathomechanism of the disease is obscure. No successful treatment is known.
