Nowadays a large number of patients seek their surgeon requesting the application of laparoscopic surgery. According to the most update knowledge and the experience with successful and 'edifying' cases, it seems that the process of the preoperative investigations and patient selection is either concluded, or still developing. It is obvious that the development of laparoscopic surgery is associated with the introduction and conquest of this technique to new fields of surgery, but the new steps need to be achieved with cautious safeguards and responsibility. Care should be taken that only well established, elaborated and practised procedures are allowed to be routinely performed. These new possibilities should be defined. Their number is growing with incredible speed, and among them so many well established and elaborated procedures are found. However, the correctness of some reported scientific papers, which present new laparoscopic procedures, is usually accepted with doubtfulness and astonishment. We think that it is a matter of responsibility and careful consideration to decide the possibility and the selection, of where and when to introduce and apply. What is the current status of laparoscopic surgery today, 'quo vadis laparoscopy'? Without exaggeration we would like to present this review and survey: where is the laparoscopic approach applied safely, and where does it need further recognition and proof.
