Wettabilities of plasma deposited polymer films

Abstract

We have investigated the wettability of hydrocarbon films deposited in capacitively coupled He, Ar/C2H2 rf discharges. Depending on the discharge pulse lengths we obtained hydrophobic films with contact angles either between 80° and 86° or between 100° and 140°. By treating the latter class of hydrophobic films in Ar or He discharges the film surfaces became hydrophilic with a contact angle not distinguishable from 0°. The investigated films were non-hygroscopic.
