Wave function effects in K-shell ionization

The effect of the choice of electronic wave functions, in K-shell ionization cross sections in ion-atom collisions has been studied in, the plane-wave Born approximation. The ionization cross sections for various target elements by proton impact have been calculated using the relativistic screened hydrogenic wave functions and comparison has been made with those calculated from the Dirac-Fock-Slater wave functions. The results indicate that the wave function effects in K-shell ionization are in general less than a few percent, except for low-energy protons on heavy elements.
