Abstract

The verotoxigenic properties of 203 Escherichia coli strains isolated during 1973-1993 from human infections and food samples were investigated. On the basis of Vero-cell toxicity test and DNA probes, we were able to demonstrate that verocytotoxin (VT)-producing E. coli occurred in Hungary both in serogroup O157 and among non-O157 strains (O26, O128). Two E. coli serotype O26:H11 strains originated from hospital outbreak of enteritis in infants in 1977 and five strains of serotype O128:H12 originated from samples of pasteurized milk from a dairy. Two VT+ E. coli serotype O157:HNT and O157:H7 strains were isolated from sporadic cases of bloody diarrhoea in 1990 and 1993 respectively. In the latter case, long-lasting carriership and recurrence of symptoms were found. All VT-producing E. coli strains belonging to serogroups other than O157 fermented D-sorbitol within one day and showed β-D-glycuronidase (BDG) activity. VT-producing E. coli strains belonging to serogroup O157 failed to ferment D-sorbitol or to show any BDG activity.
